As a parent, the safety of your child while
riding in a vehicle is of the upmost importance. Unfortunately, each year
thousands of young children are killed or injured in car crashes in the US and
around the world.
The good news is that advances in materials and technology have allowed
designers to create child safety seats that are far superior to seats built just
a decade ago. These new seats are safer, lighter and stronger than ever before.
The only question is which infant car seat is right for you and your child?
Several factors go into the selection of the right seat for your needs. These
include the height and weight of your child, his or her age, and the type of
vehicle you drive. Another consideration when choosing an infant car seat is
cost, although you always want to pick the safest seat you can afford.
Types of child safety seats
Rear facing seats - the only choice for infants less than one year of age
and less than 20 pounds.
Front facing seats - these are safe for toddlers and pre-schoolers over
one year old, and over 20 pounds.
Convertable seats - these are seats that swivel so they can be either
front-facing or rear-facing, depending on the childs age and weight.
Booster seats - these are for older children, until about age 7 or 8, or until they’re tall enough (4' 8" or taller) to use regular seat belts.
Almost all newer infant car seats, and cars built after 2002, are fitted with a
LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) attachment system that eliminates
the use of seat belts to secure the seat. These newer cars have strong anchors
built into the back seat. The seat attaches to these anchors, providing a strong
support in case of an accident.
Whichever seat you use, always be aware of the danger that front passenger-side
airbags can pose in the event of an accident. This is especially true of
rear-facing infant car seats. If your car has a passenger-side airbag, always
put your child in the rear seat when operating your vehicle.
