Convertable infant car seats are basically two seats in one. When the seat is
turned in the rear-facing position, it’s an infant seat suitable for children up
to one year of age, and up to 20 pounds in weight. When the seat is turned in
the forward-facing position, it is suitable for toddlers and young children up
to about 4 years of age, and about 40-60 pounds.
The obvious advantage of a convertable car seat is the fact that you can get a
lot more use out of it as your child ages. You won’t have to buy a new
forward-facing seat when your child reaches his or her first birthday (and be
left with a rear-facing seat you have no use for). You can just swivel the
convertable seat around and keep using it until little Jimmy or Nancy turns
four.
But there are some things to consider with convertable infant car seats. By
design these seats are larger, bulkier and heavier due to the added mechanism at
the base. They also don’t have the convenient carrying handles that rear and
forward-facing seats are equipped with. And convertable seats are usually more
expensive than their fixed-position counterparts.
Almost all convertable seats come with 5-point harnesses that attach at the
hips, between the legs, and over the shoulders. These harnesses will keep your
child safe and well restrained in the case of panic stops, vehicle swerving, or
heaven forbid, an accident.
