As parents - and adults in general - are looking
to get more exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle, many of them are turning to
bicycles as a form of transportation as well as recreation. And parents with
small children are incresingly bringing their kids along for the ride.
Just as in other areas of child transportation, the modern bicycle carriers have
evolved into lighter, stronger, and safer platforms for bringing children along
on bike rides.
Child bicycle carriers come in two main types:
Seats that mount either on the front or the
rear of the bicycle.
A trailer that is pulled behind the bicycle.
Bicycle-mounted seats are designed primarily for children who are 1 to 3 years
of age, depending on their size. Most seats can accomodate kids up to about 40
pounds, although many children grow too tall for the seats before they get too
heavy for them.
The most popular seat configuration is the “rear-mounted” seat, ie the seat is
mounted to the rear of the bike behind the adult. This arrangement is generally
safe, although there is some risk of the child’s foot becoming tangled in the
spokes.
The “front-mounted” seats aren’t as popular, but they have some advantages. For
one, the child’s weight over the front wheel is more stable than that same mass
would be over the rear wheel. And of course the child is there in plain view so
the parent can keep a good eye on them.
The bicycle trailer is the third bicycle carrier option. You’ve probably seen
these elegant two-wheeled trailers being pulled behind bicycles in your
neighborhood. They are roomy, comfortable, and most will accomodate at least two
kids, with room for toys to boot. Trailers also have the advantage of being more
stable than bike seats, and they can generally hold older kids up to 100 pounds
in weight.
