Modern baby carriers come in a seemingly endless array of shapes, sizes, types,
models and brands. It can be hard to figure out exactly which carrier you need -
now and into the future - and fit it into you budget as well.
A good place to start is by considering who will be using the baby carrier. Is
it for you, your spouse, or is it a gift for somebody else? Most carriers come
in a variety of sizes to offer parents or caregivers a snug and comfortable fit.
And just because the carrier fits you, doesn’t mean it will fit your spouse, so
you may need two of them to get the job done.
How old and how big is the child who will be riding in the carrier? Each baby
carrier has its own age and weight limits that you’ll need to consider. You’ll
also want to leave some room for your child’s inevitable growth over time.
Another important consideration is how often the child carrier will be used, and
where. Some carriers are designed for basic transportation, while others offer
features that will accommodate more strenuous activities like jogging or hiking.
Once you’ve decided how the carrier will be used, then you can start looking at
the types of makes and models available on the market. Each baby carrier type
has been designed with a specific use in mind. If you’ll be using the carrier
mainly for daily activities like shopping or visiting friends, a soft carrier
like a sling or wrap will probably fit your needs. On the other hand, if you
need a carrier that will be used in outdoor activities like fishing or hiking,
you’ll probably want a backpack or frame carrier that’s designed to distibute
much of the load to your hips (and give your back a break!)
Of course the final consideration is price, especially in these tough economic
times. But just remember that the comfort of your and your baby is essential,
and buy the best baby carrier you can afford.
